Hill shadow:

August 27, 1981

I find them near the road, the hills yearning towards night, hill shadow overtaking grass shadow; Eight or ten of them, standing not quite at random, heads up from their grazing. Looming and placid as I approach, they stop even their cudding. They watch and do not watch: as expressionless as grass bending in the evening breeze, they show the dusk sky in the darkness of their stare.
