Ambassador in Stockholm freed from Iran students

August 25, 1981

Police stormed the Iranian ambassador's residence Monday, freeing the envoy and his wife, who were held hostage by 30 Iranian students demanding reforms in their homeland.

The unarmed students who identified themselves as members of the Peykar and People's Fedayeen Movement, insisted that they be allowed to hold a news conference inside the residence to present their demands, which included an official Swedish government protest against the Iranian government; that torture and execution be stopped in Iran; and that political prisoners there be released. No shots were fired, and no one was injured as police arrested the students.
