Guantanamo 'attack boat' blows up; 12 men lost

August 24, 1981

A 71-foot vessel Cuban exiles planned to use for their peaceful "invasion" of the Navy's Guantanamo Naval Base exploded and sank while at anchor a mile off Grand Caicos Island, leaving 12 men missing and apparently dead, a leader of the anti-Castro group said Sunday.

Members of Cubans United at the scene, led by Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis , speculated that the blast was the work of either frogmen or a bombing plane sent by the forces of Cuba's President Fidel Castro.
