Illinois coal mine patrolled after a bout of vandalism

August 20, 1981

State police were patrolling the construction site of a nonunion coal mine where 1,000 striking United Mine Workers union members set fires and tore down fences in a two-hour rampage Tuesday. The incident stemmed from the wildcat strike staged by 14,500 UMW members protesting construction of the Kerr-McGee mine. Industry officials said the walkout closed all but four coal mines in Illinois, but a county judge issued injunctions against the illegal strike and limited the number of pickets at the site.
