US, in switch, backs UN on news-report subsidy

In a change of position, the United States has agreed that the United Nations can continue subsidizing newspapers promoting its views on aid to the third world, the New York Times reports. US officials now tentatively back a resolution urging additional support of the World Newspaper Supplement, which carries UN views. Of the 16 foreign papers that have printed the quarterly supplement, 15 have been paid $500,000 by the UN.
