GOLF; Nelson wins PGA

August 13, 1981

* Larry Nelson, a steady, straight hitter who needed 11 tries to qualify for his first pro tournament in 1974, won his first major title last weekend at the Atlanta Athletic Club. He secured the PGA Championship by four strokes, then hoisted a glass of milk in celebration. If Nicklaus, Watson, or another of golf's big names had been in contention, the tournament might have attracted more attention. Georgians were elated, though, because Nelson, the winner of last year's Atlanta Classic, lives in nearby Acworth.
