August 10, 1981

Two people were killed in riots sparked by the death of a ninth Irish guerrilla hunger striker. Thomas Mcllwee's death after refusing food for 62 days coincided with demonstrations to mark the 12th anniversary of the deployment of British troops in Northern Ireland. Police came under automatic-rifle fire and returned fire in londonderry, while rioters in West Belfast pelted police with hundreds of gasoline bombs.
