Gambian President's wife rescued by Senegalese

The Senegalese news agency reported that Senegalese forces had rescued the wife of Gambian President Dawda Jawara and four children from leftist rebels in the Gambian capital, Banjul. The rebels, who staged an unsuccessful coup, have been holding 34 hostages in a military barracks, including President Jawara's senior wife, Lady Thielal N'Diaye. Earlier reports said 70 European hostages held by rebels in a hotel n ear Banjul were freed unharmed by Senegalese commandos.
