St. Helens lets blow a plume of steam

August 3, 1981

A small steam plume billowed out of Mt. St. Helens Sunday as the volcano shuddered with harmonic tremors for 25 minutes, scientists reported. The University of Washington geophysics labs said the plume contained a small amount of ash and reached a height of 12,000 feet, but added that the activity was not considered too unusual and did not indicate the vo lcano was building toward another eruption.
