Anti-immigrant group calls for strike in India's Assam

Leaders of a campaign against foreign immigrants in the northeastern state of Assam called for a 24-hour general strike and other demonstrations later this month to protest the failure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government to resume full talks on the issue. The anti-immigrant leaders said the strike should take place Aug. 15. More than 290 people have died in the 22-month-old agitation, aimed mainly agains t illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
