Dvorak, Antonin: Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op. 70. Philharmonica Orchestra, Andrew Davis conductor. CBS MASTERWORKS 36684 -- There are numerous fine recordings of this work available, perhaps the least popular of Dvorak's last three symphonies. The danger has always been to overinflate it, or to become so obsessed with detail and moment-to-moment beauty, that the craggy, tortuous vistas are glossed into some touristy foothills view. Davis treads the line between the two camps very well indeed. His straightforward, vigorous account, with one ortwo vagaries of interpretation aside, is ne at, effective, and well though out.
