Women, children stage Polish protest march

Worker unrest over shortages of food and other consumer goods continued to spread across Poland as thousands of women and children marched through Lodz, the nation's second-largest city, chanting, "We want to eat."

The Sejm (parliament) met to consider the country's dire economic condition and was told by an official that the Communist government's recent emergency measures had not brought the crisis under control.

The demonstration in Lodz, which climaxed four days of hunger protests, was the biggest staged in Poland since workers and housewives launced their current campaign against em pty shops, reduced meat rations, and proposed price rises.
