Correction

In its July 28 issue, the Monitor asked rhetorically in a photo caption whether pollution from steel mill furnaces warranted continuation of tough federal controls.

While the intention was to represent steel mills in a generic sense, the accompanying photograph unfortunately showed an Inland Steel Company furnace in East Chicago, Ind., which ranks as one of the least-polluting in the world. The Monitor regrets t he error.
