Louisiana classes required to add biblical creationism

July 22, 1981

Gov. Dave Treen signed into law a fundamentalist Christian-backed bill requiring Louisiana public schools that teach the theory of evolution to give equal treatment to the Bible-based theory of creation. Louisiana became the second state in the nation to mandate balanced treatment of evolution and creationism. Arkansas approved a similar measure earlier this year.

Governor Treen said the bill would ensure academic freedom by giving students the chance to learn about bot h evolution and creationism.
