Divorce in Spain legal after a 40-year ban

Divorce became legal in Spain Monday, more than 40 years after it was banned by the late dictator Francisco Franco. The new mutual-consent divorce law, approved by Parliament in a split vote last month, came into effect when it was published in the official state bulletin. Family courts are being set up to deal with an estimated half a million divorce pe titions beginning Sept. 1.
