Violence over new death upstages Ulster parades

July 14, 1981

IRA hunger striker Martin Hurson died Monday on the 46th day of his fast, sparkling new violence overshadowing traditional Orange Day parades by about 110 ,000 Protestant loyalists across the province.

Hurson's death at the Maze prison -- the sixth in the IRA campaign to win political-prisoner status -- came five days after that of Joseph McDonnell. Three people died in violence after McDonnell's death.

There were no immediate reports of violence involving the Orange Day parades marking the victory of the Protestant King William of Orange over the deposed Roman Catholic monarch, James II. About 30,000 people paraded through Belfast to the beat of flutes and drums to reaffirm their Protestant faith and co mmitment to political union with mainland Britain.
