Handicapped who climbed Rainier hailed by Reagan

July 9, 1981

President Reagan told a group of handicapped climbers that when they planted the US flag atop Mt. Rainier, they also "planted the courage and capabilities of disabled people firmly in the minds of all Americans.

"The tremendous bond that was forged, where you complemented each other and joined together to accomplish a goal, is a significant lesson on what all of us as Americans can accomplish if we work together," Mr. Reagan told the group of 11 during a Rose Garden cerem ony.
