Maine library to honor Margaret Chase Smith

Groundbreaking is slated Thursday for the $1 million Margaret Chase Smith Library Center, next to the home of the former longtime Maine senator. The library will house a research facility, rare-book rom, display areas, and seminar room.

Northwood Institute, a group of three schools in Michigan, Indiana, and Texas , is sponsoring the library project. Mrs. Smith, who left 36 years' service in the Congress in 1973, donated her home and 12 acres of land to Northwood in 1979 . She now has a residence in Silver Spring, Md.

Mrs. Smith is first represented Maine in the House of Representatives in 1940 and was elected to the first of four Senate terms in 1948, where she set a record of voting in 2,941 consecutive roll calls.
