A- Pleasure to drive. Precise handling, especially cornering. Good feel of road. Front seats excellent, rear seat unusually comfortable. Unexpectedly good rear legroom. Headroom too tight front and rear. Difficult for any but gymmasts to enter rear seat (should have been a 4-door, despite sport-coupe tradition). Splendid finish, inside and out. Awkward look to rear ducktail; otherwise conservative sporty design. Most buyers would probably be better off with sedan version of Audi. Earl Foell, Editor

B+ Butter-smooth 5-cylinder engine, 5-speed transmission. Nimble handling, peppy performance in town and on highway. Nice craftsmanship. Controversial styling (people seem either to like it a lot or dislike it a lot). On the minus side: inadequate headroom for tall people, harsh ride on back seat. John Dillin, Managing editor/news

C If I were short, it would earn "A". Handling, road-hugging ability, acceleration, five-speed transmission, all are excellent. Though passengers do feel every road jounce. But I'm six feet -- too tall for drivers' seat: my head hits roof and is battered by it at every bump. Robert P. Hey Managing editor/features
