Bani-Sadr a 'missing person'

June 19, 1981

President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr, who had not been seen in public for eight days, is missing, the Tehran revolutionary prosecutor said Thursday. The official, Assadollah Lajverdi, said he had had no information on the President's whereabouts since Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Lajverdi said in a state radio broadcast:

"We have asked the frontier police to check for people who are accused of offenses and stop them leaving. But all our frontiers are not under police control and it is possible to leave.

"I hope Mr. Bani-Sadr will not do this. . . ."

The President has been losing ground steadily in a power struggle with the Muslim clergymen who spearheaded Iran's Islamic revolution, and he faces parliamentary moves to remove him from office.

Ayatollah Muhammad Beheshti, chief justice of Iran's Supreme Court, has also said Mr. Bani-Sadr will face legal charges. Ayatollah Beheshti, the most powerful figure in iran after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, leads the ruling Islamic Republican Party. He has been the force behind the drive to discredit the President and his moderate supporters.
