June 12, 1981

Up to 1,000 heavily armed guerrillas stormed the town of Arcatao, El Salvador , killing 14 soldiers and trapping the entire government garrison, in the biggest guerrilla attack since January's leftist offensive to topple the US-backed junta. Arcatao is seven miles north of the Cinco de Noviembre hydroelectric dam, which supplies half the country's electric power.
