Small post offices 'killed' in a House budget ploy

June 10, 1981

Nearing the june 12 deadline for committees to specify more than $35 billion in budget cuts, a House panel moved to close or consolidate thousands of small post offices -- but urged the full House to reject the action. The Democratic-dominated House Post Office and Civil Service Committee, on a 19-to-6 party line vote, approved a resolution aimed at cutting $100 million. The panel's action was a move to comply technically with the budget resolution approved by Congress la st month.
