Japanese protest Midway; Suzuki says he trusts US

A leftist guerrilla group set fire to a government building to protest the US aircraft carrier Midway's return to Japan, and Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki said he believed US assurances it has adhered to Japan's nonnuclear-weapons policy.He referred to a statement US Ambassador Mike Mansfield gave to Japanese leaders that Washington has honored its commitments to its key Asian ally.

His remarks followed weekend demonstrations by tens of thousands of people to protest the Midway's return to its home port of Yokusuka.
