Police break up students in Johannesburg protest

June 4, 1981

Police used tear gas and charged with riot sticks and dogs to disperse more than 800 mixed-race students trying to stage a protest march. The reason for the march was not immediately known but may have been connected with the detention of a Colored student leader, Aziz Jardine.

A police spokesman said the students "were scattered by police, . . . then formed up in new groups which the police again had to dispers e."
