Spanish King hailed by troops on parade

June 1, 1981

Over 13,000 troops marched past Spain's King Juan Carlos Sunday, shouting "Viva El Rey" ("Long Live the King") in the first major parade since an attempted military coup three months ago. Despite fears of urban guerrilla attacks, the parade passed in a festive atmosphere without any major incident. This was the King's first visit to Catalonia since it formed an autonomous government in 1980 and was also the first time Armed Forces Day was celebrated in an autonomous regio n of Spain.
