French poll sees leftists at 52% of legislative vote

Socialists and Communists will obtain 52.5 percent of the votes cast in the first round of the French parliamentary election, according to an opinion poll published today (June 1).

The poll said the current center- right majority would get 40.5 percent of the vote and ecologists, 7 percent.

The poll, conducted May 25 and 26 by the research institute IFOP for the magazine Le Point, confirms figures in a poll taken immediately after Socialist Francois Mitterrand won the presidential election May 10.

The poll showed 58 percent of those questioned had confidence in the new Socialist government under Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy, while 20 percent sa id they had not.
