3,000 political prisoners to be freed in Uganda

May 29, 1981

Ugandan President Milton Obote said 3,000 policital detainees would be freed immediately. In a speech marking the first anniversary of his return from nine years' exile in Tanzania, he said that his government would do everything to eliminate terrorism from Uganda. Dr. Obote said those being freed where detained before his government came to power. Most are expected to be former members of Idi Amin's forces jailed after his overthrow two years ago.
