US removes money claim on Iran from The Hague

May 15, 1981

A case against Iran brought before the International Court of Justice after the seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979 has been removed from the court's list at the request of the US government.

A communique said letters from the US government to the court made it clear that the United States, following commitments entered into with Iran at Algiers Jan. 19, wanted proceedings before the court on its claims for reparation to be discontinued.

A preliminary meeting of a US-Iranian arbitration panel to decide the fate of about $4 billion in Iranian assets frozen in the US will be held M onday.
