May 14, 1981

Physty the whale is positively feisty now -- some 65 miles out at sea --Monitor correspondent Ward Morehouse III reports. Richard Whittaker of the National Marine Fisheries Service says a pilot spotted Physty, the 25-foot baby sperm whale that tried to beach itself on Coney Island last month, swimming 65 miles south of Long Island.

Mr. Whittaker said that if Physty, named for his species, Physeter catodon, "is out that far, he must have pretty well recovered and be on his way!"

The sighting was the first time Physty had been seen since the Coast Guard escorted him some 4 1/2 miles outside Robert Moses State Park, where he convalesced after his trip to Coney Island.
