Mrs. Gandhi's other son is stepping into politics

May 12, 1981

Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has formally entered politics and next month will contest the parliamentary seat of his late brother, Sanjay. Sanjay, who was killed in a stunt-plane crash last June, had been widely regarded as Mrs. Gandhi's heir apparent. Rajiv had been acting as a personal assistant to Mrs. Gandhi's since Sanjay died. His decision to enter politics was described by par ty spokesmen as a turning point in Indian politics.
