Sinkhole in Florida suburb threatening more houses

May 12, 1981

A giant sinkhole that devoured a home, half a dozen vehicles, trees, and part of a street widened slowly Monday toward a group of houses. Since it appeared Friday, the hole has gobbled a house, a camper, and five sports cars and damaged two businesses and a swimming poos. Although the widening process has slowed, the hole -- about 1,000 feet across and 125 feet deep -- is expected to continue growing.

The cave-in was caused by dry weather that dropped the water table a nd shrank the soil and limestone beneath the surface.
