Europe, too, wants curb on Japanese car imports

May 7, 1981

The European Common Market will ask Japan for similar treatment for Europe after last week's agreement by Tokyo to limit its exports of cars that have been flooding the United States. The commission decision was announced after a meeting of the 14 members in Strasbourg, France.

Japan has said it will ask its exporters to exercise restraint in their sales to EC markets. But Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki has emphas ized that he saw no automatic link between the US-Japan pact and requests for a similar accord for Europe.
