Talks to settle coal strike to be resumed Thursday

Talks aimed at settling a 39-day-old nationwide soft coal strike will resume Thursday in Washington, United Mine Workers president Sam Church said. He made the announcement during an interview with a television station here. Despite the break in the stalled talks, the top industry bargainer, B. R. Brown, said earlier he had little hope for an end to the stalemate unless the union revised its demands.
