US to seek citizens able to serve on draft boards

May 4, 1981

On June 1 the selective service will begin soliciting volunteers for draftboard classification duties in the event of a military call-up. Letters will be mailed to organizations, asking for names of "responsible citizens" who would, in the event of an emergency, be charged with classifying the draft status of young men, said Joe Formick of the selective service's regional branch.

The plan reflects US concern with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the labor unrest in Poland, and military conflicts in other countries, he said, b ut does not mean "we are on the verge of reinstating the draft."
