Two Cubans set for retrial in Chilean envoy's murder

May 4, 1981

Two Cubans already once convicted in the assassination of former Chilean Ambassador Orlando Letelier del Solar are returning to court for a second trial in connection with the murder.

The convictions of Guillermo Novo Sampol and Alvin Ross Diaz were overturned when a federal appeals court ruled the government could not introduce testimony from informants who were their cellmates.

Mr. Letelier and an aide were killed when a bomb was detonated under their car near Washington's Embassy Row in 1976. Letelier was a top official in t he Marxist government of Salvador Allende, overthrown in 1973.
