Time caught in trees

May 4, 1981

Trees have an affinity for years, Mark cold and thunderous snow Trees have an affinity for time And watch it go, Grasp it in giant knobs, Hold it in swirls of bark Old cathedral chants of wind Trees show the mark of noise and sound and form Of hurricane In rings plot passage of the centuries. Tthere is the smell of sap The waxy feel of smoothness under bark Years burn at touch of spark There is a mystery in roots of trees.
