Latex over oil primer OK for exteriors

May 1, 1981

Q. Is it suitable to use latex paint as a second coat over oil-based primer for exterior woodwork? Laura Rethier Lake Katrine, N.Y.

A. Latex over an oil-based primer gets a green light from our painting consultant, who says he would prefer using this system on his own house if given a choice.

Be sure to properly prepare the surface before applying the primer, however.

The durability of any paint job depen ds on the care of the individual who is doing the job. In short, don't cut corners unless you like to paint.
