Waldheim calling on superpowers

April 29, 1981

UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim met with Vice-President George Bush April 27 and will visit President Reagan at the White House Thursday. Four days later Mr. Waldheim will meet with President Brezhnev in Moscow.

According to Waldheim aides, the proximity of the high-level meetings is coincidental, correspondent Louis Wiznitzer reports. Some of the most burning issues dividing the United States and the Soviet Union, such as the Middle East, Namibia, Cambodia, and Afghanistan, are before the UN in one form or another. And while the secretary-general will not be carrying formal messages between the White House and the Kremlin, he may play a usef ul diplomatic role.
