Big rally in Tehran leads to violence

April 28, 1981

About 100,000 supporters of the radical Muslim Mujahadeen-e Khalq guerrillas began a mass rally Monday in the biggest demonstration by an opposition group seen in Tehran in over a year. Supporters of the semiclandestine organization began gathering for a meeting to protest the death of four women killed in fighting in Qaem Shahr over the past week.

But violence marred the rally as at least one man was killed and four others wounded. Witnesses said Revolutionary Guards fired over the heads of the crowd to quell running battles between the guerrilla organization and pro-government Islamic extremists.
