Nicaragua expects aid from Libya and Cuba

April 27, 1981

Nicaragua announced it would receive aid totaling $164 million from Libya and Cuba. An official communique said Libya would lend Nicaragua $100 million while Cuba would provide technical aid. It gave no details. Four days before, Nicaragua's left-wing Sandinist government announced it would receive 20,000 metric tons of wheat from the Soviet Union.

The United States recently canceled $15 million of aid, including grain credits, to this Central American country after accusing it, along with Cuba and the Soviet Union, of helping leftist guerrillas in neighboring El Salvador.
