New spurt from Mt. Etna threatens market town

March 20, 1981

A fresh stream of lava from the erupting Mr. Etna volcano threatened Randazzo Thursday, and hundreds of police and soldiers stood by to evacuate the market town's 15,000 inhabitants. The fiery and smoking lava poured from a new crater 4,600 feet up the northern slopes of Europe's highest and most active volcano Wednesday morning, police reported.
