Senate budget panel OKs almost all Reagan cuts

March 20, 1981

The Senate Budget Committee approved $36.4 billion in 1982 spending cuts Thursday, giving President Reagan almost eveything he wanted in most areas and cutting deeper into a few programs. The panel, which made the bulk of the cuts at marathon sessions Tuesday and Wednesday, finished its work with approval of a long list of small cuts not completed earlier.

The action, which only needed to be sealed with a final vote on the entire package, completed the first phase of a long process aimed at drastically paring government spending. It will be the basis of instructions to individual spendin g committees to impose the cuts.
