Solidarity calls off a provincial strike

March 17, 1981

The local Solidarity union chapter Monday called off a two-hour warning strike threatened for Wednesday in response to calls for moderation from national union leader Lech Walesa and leading dissident Jacek Kuron, a Solidarity spokesman said. Walesa told a rally of 20,000 people in a sports stadium that Deputy Prime Minister Mieczyslaw Rakowski, who heads a special government labor relations commission, will travel to Radom Tuesday for talks with local Solidarity leaders. Walesa urged union members to accept compromise.

Kuron, a leading member of the Dissident Committee for Social Self D efense, met earlier with 600 representatives of Solidarity.
