Correction

In a Feb. 25 Monitor article on offshore phosphate discoveries, US Geogolical Survey geologist Richard Sheldon was misquoted as saying the US has enough onland phosphate economically mineable at today's mining pace to last "a thousand years."

The statement should have been that the phosphate deposit in Idaho (which produces less than 9 percent of the nation's total) has an economic reserve base of about 1 billion metric tons and that about one-thousandth of that is mined each year.
