Dayan urges Israel to give self-rule in West Bank

March 11, 1981

Former Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan has said that Israel should unilaterally grant self-rule to Palestinians on the West Bank of the Jordan River and on the Gaza Strip.Mr. Dayan, on a five-day visit here, said the 1.2 million Palestinians in the two Israeli-occupied regions should be given self-rule without waiting for the outcome of negotiations between Egypt, Israel, and the US. "It is up to us to grant Arab palestinians [in the two regions] self-rule. I think we should go ahead with it," he said.
