The fathers have long been GOP allies --but their siblings may soon be rivals. Barry Goldwater Jr. and Maureen Reagan -- the offspring of US Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona and President Reagan, respectively -- are both eyeing a 1982 US Senate bid in California.

Also in the running is the man they hope to topple -- Sen. S. I. Hayakawa, who is regarded as ripe for defeat by fellow Republicans as well as by possible Democratic contenders like Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.

Early polls show Goldwater enjoys a lead of 32 percent -- well ahead of Hayakawa (19 percent), US Rep. Pete McCloskey (1 6 percent), and Ms. Reagan (8 percent).m
