Mideast shuttle mediators expect no quick results

March 5, 1981

A high-level team of Islamic mediators charged with ending the Gulf war have outlined a formula designed to bring Iraq and Iran to the negotiating table, sources close to the peace mission reported Wednesday. But they cautioned against expecting swift results, saying that the positions of Iraq and Iran remained far apart.

The sources said key elements of the formula, worked out during visits to both countries, provided for a cease-fire, international guarantees for truce observance, the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Iranian ter ritory and peace negotiations.
