Salvadoran guerrillas fire on US Embassy

March 5, 1981

Leftist guerrillas raked the US Embassy with submachine gun fire Wednesday as they drove past the building aboard two vehicles, authorities said. No one was injured in the attack, the second in five months.

Meanwhile, in Washington the administration is considering an increase to more than $100 million in economic aid to El Salvador. Sources said a request by President Jose Napoleon Duarte for an estimated $200 million in emergency economic aid was unrealistic. But added there were recommendations to increase the current level of economic aid -- $63 million -- to more than $100 million.
