February 26, 1981

Secretary of State Alexander Haig plans an early visit to the Middle East for a firsthand inspection of the region's problems and to restore momentum to the US-sponsored peace negotiations. Mr. Haig, who could make the trip as soon as early April, would wish to visit Saudi Arabia and Jordan as well as Israel and Egypt, US officials said. The announcement was made after Mr. Haig joined a meeting with President Rea gan and Israeli Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir.
