Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter both courted their votes last fall, but now the Hispanics of San Antonio have a chance to elect one of their own. The mayoral race in that city -- the nation's 10th largest -- is in full swing. Election day is April 4.

Hispanics represent 53 percent of the San Antonio population and have made dramatic gains as a local political force in recent years.

The mayoral race presents them with their greatest opportunity yet. City Councilman Henry Cisneros is given a good shot at becoming the city's first Hispanic mayor. His mayor opponent is fellow Councilman John Steen.
